Peridot gets its name from the Arabic word 'faridat', meaning 'gem'.

Peridot is the August birthstone, and is the traditional gemstone gift for those celebrating a 16th anniversary.

The romans would call Peridot 'evening emerald', due to the faint amount of light it reflect at twilight.
